Safety Tips for Runners, Walkers & Joggers
August 29, 2025
The residential streets in City of Alamo Heights contains a big population of walkers and joggers. It’s that time of year to prepare for less daylight and more darkness when jogging or walking on the residential streets. Collisions between vehicles and pedestrians can result in serious injuries but are avoidable by being seen and see approaching danger. The following are some common sense tips to minimize dangers when sharing the streets with cars during low light or times of darkness.
- Wear bright clothing or reflective material blended into the clothing
- Attach reflectors and lighting on the front and back of clothing, wear reflectorized belts, or glowing bands to warn others of your presence
- Hand held flashlights with yellow, red or orange wands are universal warning colors and easily recognizable
- When walking with pets fit them with lighted or reflectorized collars and leashes
- Walk/run against traffic to observe on-coming vehicles and be prepared to take evasive action
- Carry a cellular phone
- Turn down the volume of headsets or ear buds in order to hear what’s going on around you.
