New Trash Bins Are Coming to Alamo Heights

Bigger. Easier. Better.

The City of Alamo Heights is upgrading to new standardized wheeled trash bins for all residential households. These new containers will make waste collection more efficient, safer for our crews, and easier for you.

What to Expect
  • Larger capacity to hold more household waste
  • Wheeled design for simple movement to and from the curb
  • Improved efficiency for faster, cleaner collection
  • Free delivery straight to your home — no action required
Your trash pickup day will not change.
Delivery Schedule
Public Works Staff will deliver new bins directly to each home:
West Broadway: Nov. 10th – Dec. 8th
East Broadway: Dec. 8th – Dec. 30th

Grace Period

Residents may use either their current containers or the new bins until February 6, 2026.
After that date, only the new standardized bins will be serviced. Old, unwanted bins will be collected free of charge from November 30th to February 6th, 2026, on regular trash days. Just mark your unwanted, empty bin with the sticker/tag provided when your new trash bin is delivered, and set the bin(s) out on the curb on your pick-up day.

What to Expect on Delivery Day

You don’t need to be home — our Public Works team will place your bin in an accessible location near your current trash collection area, provided your current trash bin is out for servicing. We do not want bins on the curb for a prolonged period, which could indicate that the homeowner is not home, making your house vulnerable. If you are out of town or on vacation over these dates, please contact our Public Works office at 210-822-3331 and select option 2 to arrange for your bins.

Brush and Other Materials Collection

There are certain items that are NOT picked up by Public Works Solid Waste Department:

Brush in bundles more than three feet long and more than 40 lbs will NOT be picked up on your regular garbage collection days.

No hazardous materials may be set out with regular solid waste items. Hazardous materials include flammables, such as oils, mineral spirits and thinners; poisons, such as herbicides, insecticides and rat and mouse bait; cleaners and cleansers; swimming pool chemicals, such as muratic acid; all types of paint; pressurized (spray) containers; and “sharps,” such as broken glass, hypodermic needles, sharp metals, razor blades and wire.
