City adopts Comprehensive Plan at May 26th City Council Meeting.
Proposed Revisions to Chapter 5 of the Code of Ordinance

The City of Alamo Heights is proposing changes to Chapter 5 in the Code of Ordinances related to building regulations and permits and to our schedule of fees, which include those for certificates of occupancy.
The overall purpose for the revision to this chapter was driven by public comment regarding confusing and ambiguous language, formulating more specific guidelines for public understanding of city administrative processes, and strengthening existing language where the potential for violation of the existing ordinance exists. While the full text document of the entire Chapter 5 Building and Building Regulations Ordinance as presented may indicate a significant amount of changes by underlining, the majority of all changes are a result of clarifying existing standards, filling in missing gaps from existing administrative procedures, and the relocation of existing sections to make the document more publicly user friendly. Larger changes which meet the guidelines established within the Comprehensive Plan, such as Demolition Salvage, Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, and Green Building will be considered in the near future where public interest, comment and review are necessary to ensure that our ordinances reflect the needs and wants of the general public.
A Public Hearing is being held on January 25, 2010 during the City Council Meeting to receive public input. The City Council will consider adoption of the revised Chapter 5 during the February 8, 2010 City Council Meeting.

Community Gardening, Anyone?

A desire to preserve the natural beauty of Alamo Heights while promoting sustainability was a prevalent goal that developed from 2009 Comprehensive Plan meetings. An exciting concept that many residents were interested in exploring was the creation of a community garden.
The vision is as diverse as each community.
A successful garden requires sun, water, a plot at least 20’ x 50’ and at least five non-related people who are committed to maintaining and planting the garden, says Angela Hartsell, Community Gardens Manager for San Antonio’s Green Spaces Alliance.
If you are interested in helping to start a community garden, contact Brian Chandler, AH community development director at 832-2250.
